Why join the Albion board

You can already sign up to become a part of the next Albion board here, but you might not even know if being a board member is for you. Maybe you’ve read snippets of life as a board member in the monthly recaps, or the “word of the board” in Phoenix. However, there is a lot more to being a board member than simply being present at the Albion activities. There is a lot going on alongside the Albion member affairs. You make great friends with the other boards as you bond over many beers at the many “constitutieborrels” in September. And these aren’t the only free drinks you’ll have. Throughout the year there are many different kinds of board activities; such as drinks, for many different reasons such as a Dies, the last SVO (more on this later, or because the UU is feeling generous for whatever reason; and meetings, again for many different reasons like the OC, SVO, and many other board and Albion committees.

You’ve seen the SVO being mentioned twice now. The SVO is the Studieverenigingen overleg, where all the boards of the faculty meet up and discuss a different subject once every few weeks. The SVO also has committees. There’s also the “medezeggenschap”, which is sort-of the political side of uni. The biggest players are the “faculteitsraad”, the “universiteitsraad”, and VIDIUS (the student union). You’ll get to meet all of them, see what they do, and you can even get involved.

Then of course there’s all the Albion activities. Most of these will be planned and organised by your committees, but you’ll be coördinating these committees to make sure that it all fits the Albion-year, in terms of time and nature.
Will it be a busy year? Sure, but it can be combined with two courses per block and almost everything that requires your presence is going to be fun and/or interesting.
The most important thing to remember is that you have to make the year, and the association, your own. There are rules, but these will hardly limit you in executing some of the wildest plans you might have to make Albion even better!
