Week 8, 9 & 10

Time flies when you’re having fun! If you feel like you missed out in the past few weeks here’s a recap of what Albion did in week 8, 9 and 10.

Boekenkrant Meeting
Tuesday February 18th

We were joined by Anouk Abels who works for the Boekenkrant and told us all about what they can offer Albioneers. The Boekenkrant is a paper that focuses on the literary world. And they need your help! Whether it is to gain some experience in the world of journalism, or to add to your CV, or if you just like to write: they want you.

At first, they thuoght they needed people to help out with their website and social media. However, the Albioneers that attended the meeting came up with fantastic ideas of their own that were received with much enthusiasm by Anouk. Originally they were (and still are) looking for writers of short news-updates (in Dutch, though you might find some information on the subject in English which will then need translating). You can also submit bigger pieces on anything involving books (interviews, reports, reviews) and they will review it, thereby helping you grow as a writer!

All in all, I seem to be unable to stress enough how amazing this opportunity is. But if I have managed to get my enthusiasm across in this post email Anouk!

The Voice of Linguistics
Wednesday February 19th

When I say that trees, puppets, and mobile apps all match, most people probably wouldn’t believe me. I am here to enlighten you and tell you that these three things do have something in common, our lovely department, and UU education. How, you may ask? It was all part of five different mini-lectures given by five prospective UU employees during The Voice of Linguistics. Unlike popular TV shows with similar names, we did not go to Hilversum, nor were Martijn Krabbé and Wendy van Dijk present. We had participants mr. Van de Ven, ms. Tribushinina, ms. Cole, ms. Van Hattum, and mr. Reeve, all competing for a spot in our department. Marco van de Ven presented on mobile apps created to increase reading, writing, and speaking comprehension. Elena Tribushinina used hats, and puppets, and colored balls to show how child speech works. Marcelle Cole discussed Old English dialects, and even gave us a little lesson in translating. Marije van Hattum talked about the forming of Irish English and its dialects, and Matthew Reeve used witty ambiguous sentences to explain semantic trees. We, the students, were able to be the judges in this little competition, and grade the teaching skills of all these applicants. It was not only very educational, but extremely fun.

Be sure to not miss the sequel! Check it out here.

– Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Michael Gibson started his lecture with the first few verses of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in the original Middle English! It was a wonderful performance and a very good introduction to the rest of his magical story. He continued on through many a poem to demonstrate the point he was trying to prove. Namely that every poem has the same natural rhythm, the song of verse. By singing these poems he brought his ideas to life. Michael Gibson is a true poetic wizard, inspired by the Green Man, a symbol for life and nature. He even had a small sculpture made for us which can now be found at the Albion shack!

Gangfeest + Gangdag
Tuesday February 26th + Wednesday Febraury 27th

The new ‘Gangmakers‘ alliance formed between Atlas, Awater, FUF, Incognito and Albion organised their first two events. A party at the day of Aster’s birthday and a day to just crash down on one of the couches at the Albion shack and not move from it whilst enjoying food and Disney films.
I must say that floating around dressed as the Spoetnik, sipping vodka and occasionally orbiting people, I had a blast (ha ha). Never before have I seen that many hammers and sickles in my life and throughout the entire night we were looking for that one actual Spirit Hood to secretly steal off of its owner’s head. Fur, friends and fodka, what more can we ask for?
As for the Gangdag – I must admit I only peeked into the shack for the tiniest of moments due to a busy day at the office –  but what I saw there was exactly what the Gangdag was all about. Wide-eyed party-goers watching Bambi while munching on snacks. As the tv used is still at the Shack the whole film watching thing might become an office hours thing for me. I really feel like I missed out!

Never before had we seen such a quick rise in attendance. In about 10 minutes we had already filled half the space we had reserved at the lovely Mick. Even after carnaval you guys still showed up to drink even more! And for those of you who sticked to apple juice instead (I mean myself), we appreciate that as well (thanks self).
